Opti Beginners Thursday 4:00 - 6:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM Sailors must be at least 6 years old. This class is designed for young sailors with no sailing experience. Sailors will learn about parts of the boat, rigging, boat handling, and how to have fun on the water! To participate in this class, students must be ready to work as a team, and be motivated to learn and improve. Focuses on sailing fundamentals, sailor confidence, self sufficiency, and teaching a love of sailing.
Wednesday 4:00 - 6:00 PM Friday 4:00 - 6:00 PM Saturday 1:30 - 5:00 PM Sailors must be at least 7 years old and must have prior sailing experience. To participate in this class, students must demonstrate ability to control the boat, work as a team, and be motivated to improve. Focuses on boat handling, sailor confidence, self sufficiency. Students will be introduced to racing or work on continued development of their racing skills. Sailors must be proficient in sailing in the opti.
Tuesday 4:00 - 6:00 PM Thursday 4:00 - 6:00 PM Saturday 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM Sailors must weigh at least 100 pounds and be in the eighth grade. To participate in this class, students must demonstrate ability to control the boat, work as a team, and be motivated to improve. Focuses on boat handling and racing skills, rules and tactics. Students will learn spinnaker and trapeze for the c420. The Youth Sailing Team may include 420's and ILCA’s. Sailors must be proficient in sailing in the class of boat used. Wednesday OR Thursday 12:30 - 3:30 PM This course is designed for middle-school aged students (ages 11-14 / grades 6-8). The US Sailing Reach STEM program is a 10-module course designed to implement STEM through sailing and hands-on learning. The course is taught by US Sailing certified instructors and will introduce students to concepts such as marine debris, wind power, and simple machines on sailboats. The goals of the course are to offer interactive and engaging activities that relate to the environment, math, and different types of technology while showing students how STEM relates to the island they are a part of. SCYCSA programs is taught by qualified US Sailing Instructors. For safety, vessel use is determined by age, weight, and skill level. |
Session 1: September 15 - October 31MISSION STATEMENT St. Croix Yacht Club Sailing Association, Inc. will provide educational opportunities for youth and adults in the community of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands through accessible educational sailing programs, and will promote amateur athletics through sailboat racing competitions and other community-based sailing events, fostering a passion for the sport of sailing while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, skills in seamanship, self-confidence, and environmental respect.
